Character Camp equips incoming students with a deeper understanding of College of the Ozarks and a strong community as they start their time at school.

College of the Ozarks welcomed 298 new students this fall with a week-long orientation experience called Character Camp.

Character Camp equips incoming students with a deeper understanding of the College and a strong community as they start their time at school. During Character Camp, students learn about the College’s mission, vision, and five pillars — Christian, Academic, Vocational, Patriotic, and Cultural. The program’s distinctive qualities not only prepare students for success at school, but also develop students’ character, teamwork, and servant-leadership abilities.

Students participate in the week’s orientation and activities as part of a small group, known on campus as their Character Camp “family.” Each group is led by a “Mom and Pop,” who are two upperclassmen students that act as the group’s student mentors for the week.

There were several additions to the program this year.

“This year the camp schedule was designed around a Monday through Saturday model to reflect the campus rhythm of rest and providing incoming students with the opportunity to participate in a local church community,” said Veronica Fisher, administrative assistant to the dean of students.

Throughout the week, vice presidents of the College gave introductions at the informational sessions.

“Their participation added a personal touch to the student welcome experience and helped students become acquainted with campus leaders and the important roles they serve,” Fisher said.

Alumni participation increased this year as well.

Around 40 alumni came to welcome and cheer on incoming students at the College’s “Catwalk” tradition. This tradition includes walking through The Empty Cross™, symbolizing students’ commitment to their academic journey through the lens of the Christian worldview.

Ted Martin, 1995 alumnus, was one of the alumni who wanted to pour back into the incoming students. Martin and Roxanne Amundson, C of O Associate, hosted one of the Character Camp families for dinner during the week.

Martin shared about how grateful he is for C of O and how his experience at the College impacted him.

“As I reflect back on those years, I can recall so many people – from professors to staff and local community members who made a positive impact on me,” Martin said. “It seems appropriate, especially as a local resident, to be available to encourage students and be a small part in their success on campus. I remember the day, driving through the Gates of Opportunity, not knowing why or how I got to C of O.  It was obviously God's plan and His calling. To join a Character Camp Family for dinner is just one way to welcome new students and encourage them to seek, listen, and respond to God's calling as they start their journey at Hard Work U.!  I look forward to seeing them walk through The Empty Cross™ at graduation!”

Character Camp is more than just an orientation to school. It is the first step a student takes through the Gates of Opportunity to a better future.
