Biology

Position Title:

Biology Assistant

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 4

Job Description:

Students serve as departmental assistants in the Biology Department, helping to prepare study materials, grading tests and otherwise assisting in the work of the department.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Laboratory Assistant – Assist the instructor in preparation of labs, preparing handouts, preparing and grading labs quizzes and exams, entering grades into the computers, cleaning the laboratory,
Animal Room Worker – Maintain living animal collections by feeding and watering animals, and cleaning cages and animal room,
Biology Greenhouse Worker – Maintain Biology greenhouse by watering and feeding plants, planting and repotting existing collections, weeding and cleaning,
Ecotox Lab Worker – Maintain Ecotoxicology Lab organisms including preparation of test water and food for test organisms,
Office Manager – Assist faculty members in maintaining budget records, processing of exams, etc.,
Herbarium Worker – Assist faculty member in maintaining the college herbarium by maintenance of specimen cases, record keeping, and preparation and accession of new specimens,
Tutor – Assist Biology students in department’s tutoring program.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Maintain of marine aquarium,
Work in molecular lab,
Clean (sweeping, dusting) laboratories and the Biology office,
Photocopy exams and handouts,
Wash dishes,
Office work (general typing, typing purchase orders),
Post mail.

Basic Qualifications:

Biology / Chemistry major,
Introductory Science courses (e.g.General Zoology, General Botany, General Chem I),
Secondary Education/Biology or Sec Ed/Unified Science.

Desirable Qualifications:

Ability to multi-task,
Good human relations skills,
Works well with others and has a positive attitude.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Demonstrate teamwork and professional behavior by working with professors, other Biology assistants, and students in Biology courses,
Demonstrate an ability to follow a lab preparation rubric or outline in a timely and complete manner,
Collect, collate, and record data in an organized and retrievable format,
Understand proper use of laboratories and equipment and serve in monitoring such use by all students working in the department,
Demonstrate lab safety at all times,
Mentor and tutor younger assistants and students taking Biology courses.
