The Writing Center

Position Title:

Writing Assistant

Required Schedule Flexibility

(1-5 scale with 5 as most flexible): 3

Job Description:

The Writing Center (TWC) is an academic support facility for all students, faculty, and staff of the College.  Its mission is to provide writing conferences and assistance for students with all writing projects in progress.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Conduct Reader Responses in person, in order to assist students with writing proficiency and written academic assignments,
Perform administrative tasks: filling out TWC paperwork, scheduling appointments and composition proficiency exames, answering the phone, and checking the email account,
Attend monthly staff meetings,
Edit online papers from other schools.

Secondary duties and responsibilities:

Compile and analyze statistics,
Promote The Writing Center through public relations,
Coordinate TWC staff meetings and take minutes,
Retrieve and deliver campus mail,
Coordinate classroom visits to educate students about TWC services,
Water plants,
Clean The Writing Center,
Proctor exams.

Basic Qualifications:

3.0 GPA,
Completion of Comp 103 with either an A or a B, OR successful completion of the composition proficiency exam,
Two letters of recommendation from faculty (one English teacher),
Interview with the TWC director,
Submission of sample essays,
Successful completion of OR enrollment in ENG 223 Introduction to Grammar.

Additional Remarks

Working in The Writing Center is a privilege.  Few other work stations on campus provide students with the opportunity to work with other students in academic endeavors.  Our work is highly specialized and intellectually demanding.  We have a serious responsibility to students’ academic improvement.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
Assume responsibility and work well without supervision,
Conduct effective Reader Responses by using the Socratic method to engage student writers in meaningful discussion about their written assignments,
Play the role of "other self", modeling for student writers how good writers approach brainstorming, drafting, writing, revising, and editing,
Help students move toward self-editing by using cognitive and motivational scaffolding techniques,
Understand the writing process and grammar and stylistic rules and communicate this knowledge to others through face-to-face interaction and online,
Use and monitor computers, computer software, and printer in the lab,
Provide outstanding customer service by being available and willing to help,
Make appointments for Reader Responses,
Be familiar with The Writing Center policies and procedures outlined in the staff manual,
Interact and cooperate with coworkers, students, staff, and faculty,
Make mature decisions while resolving problems and conflicts (with co-workers and clients,
Continually strive to improve both personally and professionally,
Commit to the success and mission of The Writing Center,
Behave professionally inside and outside of The Writing Center, knowing that we are representatives of The Writing Center at all times.
