Job Description:
The Foreign Language Lab operates Sunday – Friday, six days a week. The weekly Monday-Friday schedule varies depending upon the availability of the student assistants to schedule work hours. (Normally from 8 am – 4 pm). The lab is open at night from 6 pm – 9 pm Sunday – Thursday. It serves as a tutorial station and practice site for all foreign language students. Individual language tutoring is available at any time the lab is open.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Maintain the reception office for the Language Department,
Transfer incoming calls to each language professor when necessary,
Serve as administrative assistants to all language professors with any task at hand: copying, grading, tutoring, etc.,
Maintain the computer lab for student practice in required assignments from professors,
Offer language tutoring in the Language Lab upon request,
Grade and post language placement exams.
Secondary duties and responsibilities:
Maintain the Foreign Language Lab area and office reception area on a daily and weekly basis: empty trash cans, vacuum, water plants, dust, mop, general cleaning,
Assist in any manner deemed necessary by the Language Department (with visitors on campus, etc.),
Maintain bulletin boards in the reception, lab, and hall areas,
General filing of records, tests, inventories, etc.,
Maintain vertical files for each language,
Maintain department inventory,
Maintain French multimedia room,
Maintain reference material area.
Basic Qualifications:
Able to speak effectively in their language of expertise on the phone and to other students seeking assistance in the lab,
Able to tutor other students seeking linguistic support,
Dependable, prompt, and responsible with the work schedule requirement – if the lab is late in being opened, or not opened when scheduled, language students miss opportunities they desire,
Patient with their peers.
Desirable Qualifications:
Able to multi-task in aiding the professors and students, sometimes simultaneously: test grading, tutoring, etc.,
Maintain a pleasant personality when frustrated students are seeking assistance.
Learning Objectives:
The student will:
Know and follow Foreign Language (FL) lab policies and procedures,
Acquire sufficient proficiency in the office tasks typical of the position,
Be sufficiently competent with Microsoft Word and Excel for recording test scores in FL data base,
Display proper etiquette, telephone skills, etc.,
Demonstrate patience and tutoring ability when assisting others with FL content,
Create and maintain an attractive hallway bulletin board according to instructions from FL faculty,
Demonstrate janitorial skills adequate to the position, including flood response, water containment techniques, effective installation of plastic over computers and other skills corresponding to such situations,
Be able to articulate how a Biblical perspective informs and gives meaning to the above.
