The Landscaping Department is responsible for maintaining approximately 100 acres of campus grounds (lawns, shrubs, trees, flowering plants, etc.). Landscaping Department maintains five greenhouses (housing McDade Orchid Collection); open seven days a week (8 am – 5 pm)
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Lawn Areas: mowing, weed eating, seeding, fertilizing, and tractor driving,
Greenhouse Operations: plant sales, seeding, watering, transplanting, floral arranging, maintaining orchid collection and visitor tours,
Campus Flower Beds: design, tilling, planting, weeding, fertilizing, and watering,
Pest Control (insect-weeds): lawns, shrubs, trees, non-crop areas,
Equipment Operators: bush-hogging, tractor with trailer, front mount mowers, riding lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, power rakes, aerators and pick-up trucks.
Secondary duties and responsibilities:
Organization of tool storage, and maintenance of tools,
General house keeping practices in work area, storage areas, and workshop area,
Maintain equipment, etc.
Lifting, bending, walking,
Ability to communicate effectively,
Attitude for safety.
Works well with others,
Ability to operate vehicles and tractors,
Basic interest in floral design and flowering plants.

The student will:
Maintain approximately 100 acres of campus grounds, and the campus greenhouses,
Be responsible for weedeating, brush-hogging, tractor mowing, seeding, fertilizing, push mowing, and trimming,
Develop skills for greenhouse care, including plant sales, propagation, seeding, watering, transplanting, fertilizing, making floral arrangements, moving plants and decorating for special events, growing approximately 200,000 bedding plants, maintaining the College's 7,000-plant orchid collection, pest control, and conducting greenhouse tours for visitors,
Maintain 57 floral beds of various sizes by designing, cleaning, tilling and fertilizing the beds, planting, watering and maintaining them, cleaning out and winterizing, harvesting and storing bulbs and seeds,
Learn the responsibilities involved in pest control, including treating lawn areas, sidewalks, parking areas, streets, and fence lines for weeds, treating planting beds, shrubs and trees for insect and weed control,
Learn the details of trimming trees and shrubs by trimming all hedges, shrubs, and trees as needed, and the removal of dead and storm damaged trees and limbs,
Learn the process of irrigating all campus lawns, trees, shrubs, and annual beds, as needed,
Learn the skills needed to care for the 2-acre nursery area, which includes digging, baling, and burlapping trees and shrubs to be planted on campus grounds, planting and maintaining a vegetable and cut flower garden, and weed control,
Learn how to landscape new buildings, which includes site preparation, designing of planting areas, planting, seeding, and sodding, and replacing trees and shrubs as needed,
Be responsible for trash removal which includes trash from grounds, parking lots, and streets, leaf and snow removal, and clean-up after special occasions,
Learn the responsibilities of equipment care, which includes changing the oil and cleaning the air filters on lawn mowers, sharpening the mower blades, replacing handles on various tools, repairing water hoses and sprinklers, minor repair of small engines, and general clean-up of tools and equipment,
Learn the safety practices related to each of the tasks above.
