Beulah I. Winfrey Business Alumni Chapter 11/1/2014
Vice President Kevin Riley called the meeting to order at 11:03 a.m. Riley welcomed everyone to the meeting and introductions were made by those present. The Chapter approved the minutes of the November 5, 2013 meeting.
The Treasurer’s Report showed a balance of $7,085.71 as of November 2013, dues and donations collected of $1,070.00, for a new balance of $8,155.71. With the $1,000.00 allocated for travel to the Business Undergraduate Society this past academic year, the November 2014 balance is $7,155.71.
The Business Undergraduate Society expressed thanks to alumni members supporting its trip to Little Rock, Arkansas. The group toured headquarters and met with managers of Windstream, Acxiom, and Dillard’s. The group was also attended an Arkansas Travelers’ baseball game with a tour and meeting with the marketing department. The Alumni Chapter approved a $1,000.00 donation of funds to the Business Undergraduate Society to support another trip next semester.
Lindon Newberry presented an update on the transition from SIFE to the Phi Beta Lambda student group. At national competition, CofO business student Jessica Turner placed first and received a $1000.00 scholarship.
The Sigma Beta Delta honor society had ten inductees last spring. New members will be inducted in the spring semester along with those business students being recognized with outstanding academic performance.
Kevin Riley expressed appreciation to Jeff Shipley (1999), Ben Dolan (1992), Jeremy Braden (2005), and MiKaela Wardlaw-Lemmon (2000) for returning to campus to speak to current business students. All were well received by the students and provided insight not available in regular class sessions. Riley also acknowledged former faculty members Rachel Mullinax and Rex Mahlman for attending this year’s Chapter meeting.
Officers for next year will be Kevin Riley, President, moving up from Vice-President, Robert Wheeler, Vice-President, moving up from Secretary/Treasurer, and Jeff Shipley, Secretary/Treasurer, elected at this meeting.
In new business, Kevin Riley was charged with exploring options to raise funds from business and accounting alumni to support refurbishing the Plaster School of Business building. The meeting was adjourned at 11:25 a.m.
