Beulah I. Winfrey Business Alumni Chapter 11/5/2016
This years’ meeting began with the dedication ceremony for naming the School of the Ozarks’ Upper School. The Beulah I. Winfrey Upper School was officially dedicated on November 5, 2016. President Robert Wheeler called the meeting to order immediately after the ceremony. The Chapter approved the minutes of the November 7, 2015 meeting.
The Treasurer’s Report showed a balance of $9,945.71 as of November 2015, dues and donations collected of $1,120.00, for a new balance of $11,165.71. With the $1,000.00 allocated for travel to the Business Undergraduate Society this past academic year, the November 2016 balance is $10,065.71.
The Business Undergraduate Society expressed thanks to alumni members supporting its trip to Memphis. The group toured headquarters and met with managers of Memphis Redbirds, Bass Pro Pyramid, and Archer-Malmo Advertising agency. The Alumni Chapter approved a $1,000.00 donation of funds to the Business Undergraduate Society to support another trip in this academic year.
The Phi Beta Lambda student group sent twenty students to district competition with four qualifying for the national competition in Atlanta. One of our students placed first in the nation in client services, one student placed fifth in the nation in business law, and on student placed fifth in the nation in the “help desk” competition.
The Sigma Beta Delta honor society had nine inductees last spring. New members will be inducted in the spring 2017 semester along with those business students being recognized with outstanding academic performance.
Kevin Riley expressed appreciation to Jeff Shipley (1999) and Jeremy Braden (2005) for returning to campus to speak to our business students. Riley also acknowledged former business faculty member Rex Mahlman for attending this year’s Chapter meeting.
Officers for next year will be Jeff Shipley, President, moving from Vice-President, Kevin Riley, Vice-President, moving from Secretary/Treasurer, and Robert Wheeler, Secretary/Treasurer, elected at this meeting.
It has been over sixteen years since Dr. Winfrey passed. The dedication ceremony focused on her 53 years of service to School/College of the Ozarks and her impact across campus. There was no new business. The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
