Governor Mike Parson to present flag from USS Missouri submarine to College of the Ozarks tomorrow, Oct. 11

POINT LOOKOUT, MO. — Missouri Governor Mike Parson will present a Missouri flag to College of the Ozarks in a brief ceremony at The Keeter Center tomorrow, Oct. 11, at 10 a.m. The flag is from the USS Missouri (SSN-780), a Virginia-class attack submarine.

Parson will address those gathered, and College President Jerry C. Davis will accept the flag on behalf of the College. The public is welcome to attend the free event.

“We are pleased to accept this beautiful flag,” Davis said. “We appreciate this special gift from Governor Parson. It will serve as a reminder of our dedication to serve the great state of Missouri and our country.”

Parson said he wants to present this flag to College of the Ozarks in recognition of its patriotic goal: to encourage an understanding of American heritage, civic responsibilities, love of country, and willingness to defend it. He also plans to meet with candidates from the College’s newly announced Bobcat GOLD Program, wherein the College will commission graduates as second lieutenants in the Missouri Army National Guard, beginning with the 2018-19 academic year. Maj. Gen. Stephen L. Danner, the adjutant general of Missouri, and Davis signed the agreement in a brief ceremony, Sept. 5, 2018, at College of the Ozarks. Six candidates have signed up for the program.

“Through the years, College of the Ozarks has fully supported America’s armed forces through its military science courses, patriotic scholarship programs, and extensive military museum,” Parson said. “Therefore, I believe that their campus is the ideal location to proudly display the special Missouri flag that I had the honor of receiving while visiting the USS Missouri in Hawaii last January. Missouri is proud of our servicemen and women and appreciates Dr. Davis’ vision and commitment to instill patriotism in our next generation of leaders.”

College administrators will display the flag in the Hook Activities Center, a new facility on campus.
