Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial Dedication to be held at College of the Ozarks campus

Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial ImagePOINT LOOKOUT, MO. — The dedication of The Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial will take place on the campus of College of the Ozarks on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.

The purpose of the memorial is to honor the fallen and properly thank Vietnam War Veterans for their sacrifice and bravery. The memorial will stand near the College’s entrance and will bear the names of the more than 1,400 Missourians who served and died in the Vietnam War.

Families of the fallen are invited to attend the April 22 dedication along with friends of the College, state and national dignitaries, and members of the community. The College of the Ozarks invites those Missourians whose immediate family members died while serving in Vietnam to call the College and share their information. The College will welcome those families with special observances during the ceremony.

For more information, call the public relations department at (417) 690-2212.

A dream becomes a reality

Missouri state legislators made College of the Ozarks the official site for the memorial with Senate Concurrent Resolution 43, which was adopted the last day of the 2014 session on May 16.

The project is a collaboration between the College and the PGA TOUR, as C of O is an official charity of the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar golf tournament. The College received $500,000 as a result of their volunteer efforts and another $30,000 when they were named Charity of the Year by the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour in January 2015.

The Branson chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 913, also had dreams of building a memorial in Branson. Bob Sarver, former president of Chapter 913, said they felt the Branson area was a natural place to build the memorial in light of the number of Veterans who visit the area and are honored here each year. They approached the state of Missouri about the resolution, and next, they approached Davis.

“We had approached Dr. Davis about finding a piece of property, and then we would take care of it,” Sarver said. “And then he comes to me and says, ‘You know what, we’ve got this golf tournament coming up. We’re going to pay for it all.’”

The memorial was designed by Austin Meyer, a 2014 College of the Ozarks graduate, and is being constructed by staff and students. The names of the more than 1,400 Missouri fallen will be engraved on two walls, separated by a statue of Vietnam Veterans. A flower bed in the shape of the letter “V” for valor will display red flowers, representing the blood shed by Missouri soldiers.
