College of the Ozarks nursing major completes externship at Mayo ClinicHailey Alexander (center), senior nursing major at College of the Ozarks, explores Minneapolis with fellow Summer III Nurse Externship Program workers.
POINT LOOKOUT, MO. —Last summer Hailey Alexander, senior nursing major at College of the Ozarks, completed an externship at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
The externship offers a learning opportunity during which nursing students participate in direct patient care. It is offered annually and begins in June. Each summer, students from across the U.S. take part in the externship.
During this 10-week externship, students have the unique opportunity to work alongside multiple RN clinical coaches to provide patient care in a team environment.
“I received the email that I was accepted into the top 100 applicants and later received my acceptance for the Summer III Nurse Externship Program at Mayo Clinic,” Alexander said. “Since being accepted, my professors have poured valuable information into me.”
Alexander worked on the Medical Cardiology Progressive Care Unit with observation days in the Emergency Room, Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit, and Cardiac Surgery.
“This externship has changed my life. I truly have been able to see the art of nursing on a consistent basis,” said Alexander. “I have been able to see medical care that is number one in the nation. From gaining this experience this summer, I have been able to implement techniques I have learned. I know appropriate nursing interventions to implement, while also connecting with patients to create a nourishing environment for them. I was able to see critical situations handled with tact, and I was also given many educational opportunities, like job shadowing in the cardiac operation room, neurosurgery intensive care unit, and the emergency department.”
