College of the Ozarks dairy students receive First Place Awards at Missouri and Arkansas state fairs

POINT LOOKOUT, MO. — The College of the Ozarks Agriculture Department attended the Missouri and Arkansas state fairs this fall. Ryan Bilyeu, assistant dairy manager at the College, went with students and presented their best Holstein and Ayrshire dairy cattle.

After breeding and raising two of their Holsteins and one of their Ayrshire to show in various classes, the C of O dairy farm was able to place well in the competitions, receiving three first-place ribbons at both the Arkansas State Fair and at the Missouri State Fair.

“One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing students take ownership in the dairy cows,” Bilyeu said. “They put a lot of hard work and time into their cows to get them prepared for these cattle shows. The students represent our school very well at these competitive events. Showing has always been a big part of College of the Ozarks. Four out of the five students have never had the privilege to show livestock before coming to college.”

“The heifers did really well, and Ashley, the Holstein milk cow we brought, also did really well,” said Tyler Robinson, junior agriculture business and animal science double major. “I learned quite a bit about the dairy cattle show process. We had a lot of fun working with the cattle.”
