College of the Ozarks Sports Teams Named 2009-10 NAIA Scholar Teams of the Year

All four of the College of the Ozarks athletic teams have been awarded the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar Team of the Year Awards.  Volleyball, Baseball and Men’s and Women’s Basketball were all included.

For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution.  The team grade point average must include all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible.  A record total of 857 teams, received the award.

College of the Ozarks Announces New Baseball Coach

College of the Ozarks announced today that Jason Reinsch will fill the position of Head Baseball Coach.  Reinsch had previously served as Assistant Baseball Coach and Intramural Director.

Reinsch pitched at C of O from 2002-2006 before graduating in the spring of 2007.  He began his coaching career in 2003 when he joined the Republic American Legion coaching staff, where he served for two years.  Since then, he has served as both an assistant and head coach with the Midwest Nationals summer organization.  Reinsch was also the head baseball coach at Iberia High School in central Missouri during the 2007 – 2008 school year.

Coach Reinsch is a graduate of Republic High School and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History and Secondary Education from College of the Ozarks.  He recently completed his Master’s Degree in Activities and Athletic Administration from William Woods University.

Jason is married to Lacie (Cole) Reinsch, a C of O graduate, who is currently teaching at Kirbyville Middle School.  Jason and Lacie reside in Hollister.

Bobcat Baseball

The Bobcats series with Oklahoma Wesleyan has been postponed due to inclement weather expected in the area on Friday. The opening doubleheader has been rescheduled for Saturday at 3:00 with the final two games to be played at a later date. The Bobcats need two wins in the series over the Eagles to secure a spot in the Midlands Conference Tournament.

MCAC Pitcher of the Week – Joel Harrington

Freshman lefthander Joel Harrington has been named MCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 11.  Harrington (Springfield, Mo.) scattered four hits over 6.0 innings and did not allow an earned run as he helped the Bobcats knock off 19th-ranked York College, 6-1, last week. He is now 3-2 on the season with a 3.25 ERA.

Student-Athletes of the Week Award

Two College of the Ozarks Bobcat Baseball Freshman Players have followed up their selection of Midlands Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week by earning the Arvest Bank/Hometown Radio Student-Athletes of the Week Award.

Brady Renner of West Aurora, Illinois was selected as the Midlands Conference Player of the Week after going 8-14 in a three game series against Kansas Wesleyan in March which included 4 RBI.

Joel Harrington of Springfield was named the Midlands Conference Pitcher of the Week after winning an 8-2 decision over Kansas Wesleyan scattering five hits, striking out five, and giving up no earned runs.

Arvest Bank and Hometown Radio present the Student-Athlete of the Week Award throughout the school year.

MCAC Baseball Weekly Awards

Player of the Week – Brady Renner (College of the Ozarks)
Freshman outfielder Brady Renner of C of O has been named MCAC Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending March 21.  A native of West Aurora, Ill., Renner went 8-for-14 (.571) over three games last week with four runs scored, three RBI, a double and stolen base. In a 14-13 setback to Kansas Wesleyan University, he went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Pitcher of the Week – Joel Harrington (College of the Ozarks)
Freshman left-hander Joel Harrington of C of O has been named MCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 21.  Harrington, a native of Springfield, Mo., scattered five hits over 7.0 innings with no earned runs to pick up the victory in an 8-2 win over Kansas Wesleyan University. He also struck out five in the win. 

The Bobcats are 5-11 overall in 2010.

Coach John Hartley earned his 900th career victory

College of the Ozarks Baseball Coach John Hartley earned his 900th Career Win after sweeping a doubleheader against Morningside College at Bob Smith Field. Hartley added one more win Sunday as the Bobcats took an 8-5 win over Iowa Wesleyan to win three out of five games during the weekend. Hartley, who is in his third season at C of O, coached American Legion Baseball at Springfield Kickapoo along with High School and Legion Baseball at Willard in a coaching career that has spanned 30 years.

Indiana Wesleyan forced College of the Ozarks into ice-cold shooting and took advantage of 15 turnovers en route to a 68-50 quarterfinal victory Saturday at the Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.  C of O’s 29-5 season comes to an end in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row.

Emily Bell’s career as a Bobcat came to a close with a 19-point outing on 6-of-12 tries.  She was joined in double figures by Tara LaRue’s  12 and Morgan Smith’s 11 points.  Ozarks outscored Indiana Wesleyan down low with 26 points in the paint.

Unseeded  College  of the Ozarks fell short on its upset bid against 10th seeded Cornerstone University (MI) 73-72 in the first round of the 2010 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball national Championship.  The 2010 event is hosted at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

Ozarks was led by junior Jared Howerton who sunk 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Mike Wiebe netted 19 points, going 4-of-7 from the three-point line.  Scott McElvain pulled down 11 boards in leading Ozarks to a 37-28 advantage on the glass.  The Bobcats finish their season with a 20-11 record.

Coach George Wilson earned his 900th career victory

Women’s Basketball Coach George Wilson earned his 900th career victory Friday night as the Lady Bobcats defeated Haskell Indian Nations 81-51 at Keeter Gym.

Wilson coached high school boys’ basketball for 31 years where he accumulated a 559-284 record.  In his 13 years at C of O, Wilson has  amassed a record of 341-73.  He guided the Lady Bobcats to four straight NAIA final four appearances and to three national championship games.

MCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week


Freshman forward Derrick Williams has been named MCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 11. Williams, a native of St. Joseph, Mo., averaged 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game last week in leading the Bobcats to a 3-0 record. In wins over the University Saint Francis (79-68) and Alice Lloyd College (98-89), he posted identical statistics of 21 points, five rebounds and two assists in each contest. For the week, he was 22-of-38 from the field (57.9 percent).

Derrick Williams Player of the Week & Student Athlete of the Week


Freshman basketball player Derrick Williams, after being named the Midlands Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, has now added the Arvest Bank/Hometown Radio Student-Athlete of the Week award to his honors.

Williams, from St. Joseph, shot 76.5% in two games making 13 of 17 shots attempted and averaging 18.5 points in those two games. Williams netted 25 points in the Bobcats win over Ouachita Baptist, which extended C of O's winning streak to five games.

NAIA Names College of the Ozarks a Champions of Character Institution

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the NAIA Character Integration Committee and the National Office selected College of the Ozarks as an NAIA Champions of Character institution.  NAIA Champions of Character institutions create an environment that encourages every student athlete, coach, official and spectator to be committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

College of the Ozarks has been named a Champions of Character Institution by the NAIA each year since the inception of the Champions of Character Program in 2000.  The College is also home to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament held annually in March.  This coming March will mark the eleventh year for the College to host the Tournament.

Derrick Williams (College of the Ozarks)


Freshman forward Derrick Williams of the College of the Ozarks has been named MCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 13.

A native of St. Joseph, Mo., Williams averaged 18.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last week in leading the Bobcats to a pair of victories over Lyon College and Ouachita Baptist. In a 79-72 win over Ouachita Baptist, he had 25 points, four rebounds and two assists. For the week, Williams connected on 13-of-17 shots from the field (76.5 percent).

The Bobcats are 7-6 on the season.


Volleyball Awards

The NAIA has announced the 2009 Tachikara-NAIA All-America Volleyball Teams, as selected by the NAIA Volleyball All-America Selection Committee.  Jennifer Nichols has been tapped as an Honorable Mention All-American.  Jennifer is a senior from Republic, Missouri.

Also, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the All-Region Teams and Veronica Barrientos, a junior middle blocker from Omaha, Nebraska, made the West Central Region team.


College of the Ozarks-- Volleyball Tryouts

We will be doing a three part tryout.  You must participate in all three to be eligible.  At noon we will break for lunch and hand out the first cuts at that time.  Lunch will be on your own.  Tryouts will start again at 1:00pm and the second set of cuts will be done around 3:00pm.

Where:  Tryouts will be held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of              College of the Ozarks.

2009 MCAC Tournament Champs

Jennifer Nichols and Veronica Barrientos combined for 28 kills to lead the College of the Ozarks to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) victory over 14th-ranked Bellevue University in the championship match of the 2009 MCAC Tournament at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bobcats improved to 26-10 on the season and earned an automatic berth into the NAIA Volleyball National Championship.

The Bruins fell to 28-7 overall after having their 14-match winning streak snapped.

Bailey Second Team All-American

Lindsy Murray Bailey was honored for her selection as an NAIA Second Team All-American as a part of Homecoming.  Lindsy played three seasons for the Lady Bobcats after transferring from Crowder College.  She was a member of two National Tournament Runner-up teams and a Final Four team.  Lindsy was presented her certificate by Coach George Wilson.

Former C of O basketball player, Kayli Combs’ number 25 jersey was retired during Homecoming Festivities.  Kayli was a two-time First Team NAIA All-American, a Third-Team All-American her sophomore year, and a WBCA State Farm NAIA All-American her senior season.  She was also named Player of the Year for the MCAC her senior year and was a First-Team All-Conference selection her sophomore and junior seasons.

Sophomore Paige Flowers has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week for the week ending Nov. 1. Flowers (Denton, Texas) averaged 9.10 assists, 1.90 digs and 0.60 total blocks per game last week in leading the Bobcats to a 2-1 record. In a 3-2 loss to John Brown University, she had 44 assists, 10 digs and five total blocks.

Junior Brittney Day has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Libero of the Week for the week ending Nov. 1. A native of Republic, Mo., Day averaged 5.27 digs per game last week as the Bobcats posted a 2-1 record, including sweeps of the College of Saint Mary and York College.

MCAC Hitter of the Week – Veronica Barrientos

For the second week in a row, junior middle hitter Veronica Barrientos of the College of the Ozarks has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Hitter of the Week for the week ending Oct. 25. A native of Omaha, Neb., Barrientos averaged 4.38 kills and 1.46 total blocks per game over four matches last week for the Bobcats, compiling a .521 hitting percentage. In a 3-1 loss to Baker University, she had 15 kills and nine total blocks (three solos). For the week, she had 19 total blocks.

MCAC Setter of the Week – Paige Flowers

Sophomore setter Paige Flowers of the College of the Ozarks has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week for the week ending Oct. 18. A native of Denton, Texas, Flowers averaged 12.33 assists, 2.33 digs and 0.55 blocks per game last week as the Bobcats earned three sweeps of MCAC opponents. In a 3-0 win at the College of Saint Mary, she had 36vassists, six digs, two total blocks and two service aces.

Junior middle hitter Veronica Barrientos of the College of the Ozarks has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Hitter of the Week for the week ending Oct. 18. Barrientos, a native of Omaha, Neb., averaged 4.22 kills and 1.45 total blocks per game last week in leading the Bobcats to three MCAC victories last week. Barrientos, who had a .478 hitting percentage for the week, had 14 kills and four total blocks (three solos) in a 3-0 sweep of the College of Saint Mary on Friday.

MCAC Setter of the Week – Paige Flowers

Sophomore Paige Flowers of the College of the Ozarks has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week for the week ending Oct. 4. A native of Denton, Texas, Flowers averaged 11.64 assists, 2.38 digs, 0.88 kills and 0.63 blocks per game over two matches last week. In a 3-2 setback to 15th-ranked Bellevue University, she had 55 assists, 10 digs, five kills and three total blocks.  The Bobcats are now 4-1 in the MCAC and 15-7 overall.

Hitter of the Week – Jennifer Nichols

For the second week in a row, senior outside hitter Jennifer Nichols has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Hitter of the Week for the week ending Oct. 4. Nichols, a native of Republic, Mo., averaged 6.11 kills and 3.33 digs per game last week as the Bobcats posted a 1-1 record. In a 3-2 loss to 15th-ranked Bellevue University, she had 31 kills and 18 digs. For the week, Nichols owned a .304 hitting percentage.

Various pre-season scrimmages and exhibition games are scheduled for the next few weeks for baseball and men’s and women’s basketball.

The Baseball team scrimmages this Saturday, Oct. 3, 1:30 pm. at Meador Park against Drury.  They will also host the KC Bullets at home on Oct. 17.  Game time is TBA.  The women’s basketball team plays in the Evangel Jamboree on Oct. 17 beginning at 9 am.  They will also play an exhibition game with Maryville University in St. Louis on Oct.  25th at 1:00 pm. The men’s basketball team will scrimmage at Three Rivers in Poplar Bluff on Oct. 17.  Game times are TBA.  On Oct. 24th they will play scrimmages at CBC in Springfield.  Game times are 12:30 pm, 2:50 pm, and 5:10 pm.

Day averaged 4.20 digs per game last week as the Bobcats improved to 3-0 in conference play with sweeps of Central Christian College and Haskell Indian Nations University.

Senior outside hitter Jennifer Nichols of the College of the Ozarks has been named MCAC Women’s Volleyball Hitter of the Week for the week ending Sept. 27. Nichols averaged 3.40 kills, 2.40 digs and 1.00 service aces per game last week in helping the Bobcats to a pair of conference wins over Central Christian College and Haskell Indian Nations University. In a 3-0 sweep of Haskell, she had 14 kills and 10 digs. For the week, she posted a .364 hitting percentage. College of the Ozarks is 14-6 overall and 3-0 in MCAC action this season.

A native of Republic, Mo., she averaged 5.47 digs per game last week for the Bobcats over four matches, including a 20-dig performance in a 3-0 sweep of John Brown University. The Bobcats are 12-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Arvest Bank/Hometown Radio Student-Athlete of the Week Award winner is Jennifer Nichols. Nichols, a senior from Republic, is leading the Midlands Conference in kills and was one of the leaders in the Lady Cats win in their conference opening match Tuesday night at Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Dr. Gary Turbak, Athletic Trainer and Assistant Professor, has recently been elected President Elect of the NAIA-ATA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-Athletic Trainers Association).   As President Elect, he will chair the Nominating Committee, and the Newsletter and Public Relations Committee.  Gary previously  served as the Chairperson of the Scholarship and Awards Committee for Athletic Trainer of the Year and Vice-President of the NAIA Athletic Trainers the past three years.

The College of the Ozarks won one and lost one on Friday of the annual C of O Mazzio's Pizza Volleyball Tournament at Keeter Gym. The Lady Bobcats beat William Jewell and lost to Wayland Baptist in Friday's matches. On Saturday, the Lady Cats lost to Oklahoma Baptist and beat William Woods.

The Lady Cat Volleyball team was chosen to place second in the Midlands Conference Preseason Poll. C of O was picked second behind defending Conference Champion Bellevue. Peru State and College of Saint Mary are picked third and fourth with Haskell, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Central Christian, and York rounding out the poll. C of O, coming off a 29-8 record last season, will open the 2009 Campaign on August 28-29 with a tournament in Oklahoma City.

College of the Ozark announces that C of O Men’s basketball coach Steve Shepherd has signed 6’4 guard Weston Wiebe to a letter of intent.  Weston played his prep ball at Lawrence Free State High School (KS) and is transferring  to C of O after playing one year at Independence Community College (KS).

Baseball Bobcats Recruiting Class of 09-10 Announced

The Baseball Bobcats completed their recruiting season by announcing 13 players coming to Point Lookout to join College of the Ozarks and all have ties locally.  These student athletes represent a mixture of incoming freshman and transfers.  Coach Hartley announces the following players will be joining the Bobcats:
Collin Edwards is a junior left handed pitcher transferring from Coffeyville Community College.  Collin played his high school ball for Coach Hartley at Willard and was a member of the Midwest Nationals summer team.
Nate Booker is a junior infielder transferring from 3 Rivers Community College.  Nate played his high school ball at Steelville, MO and was a member of the Midwest Nationals summer team.
Derek Harwell is a sophomore infielder transferring from Drury College and joins his brother Justin with the Bobcats.  Derek played his high school and legion ball at Ozark for C of O alum Mike Essick.
Josh Maynard is a sophomore infielder transferring from 3 Rivers Community College.  Josh played his high school and legion ball at Kickapoo for Jason Howser.
Jordan Wright is a sophomore catcher transferring from Evangel University.  Jordan played his high school and legion ball at Hillcrest for Ryan Schaffitzel.
Landon Widhalm is a sophomore pitcher transferring from Jefferson County Community College.  Landon played his high school and legion ball at Lebanon for Paul Dudley.
Byron Richardson is a freshman infielder from Forsyth where he played his high school and legion ball for his father Neil Richardson.
Seth Phegley is a freshman catcher from West Plains where he played high school ball for Greg Dixon.  Seth was a member of the Midwest Nationals last summer and before he moved to Missouri – the South Texas Sliders in San Antonio.
Mikey Jennings is a freshman outfielder from Lebanon where he played his high school and legion ball for Paul Dudley.
Brady Renner is a freshman outfielder form West Aurora, IL where he played his high school and summer select ball.
Dalton Hunter is a freshman pitcher from Dora where he played his high school and summer ball for Rick Luna.  Dalton helped lead Dora to a Class 1 state championship this past spring.
Dustin Ewers is a freshman pitcher from Iberia where he played his high school ball last year for C of O assistant Jason Reinsch.  Dustin was a member of the Midwest Nationals last summer.
Joel Harrington is a freshman pitcher from Springfield Catholic where he played his high school ball for Jason Daugherty.  Joel has been a member of the Midwest Nationals for the past 3 summers.

College of the Ozarks Head Coach Steve Shepherd announced that Mike Wiebe of Branson has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for College of the Ozarks. Wiebe, a 6-6 forward, was a two time first team all state selection and led his team to the quarterfinal round of the Missouri Class 5 state championship. Wiebe averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds per game as he led Branson to a 27-3 record.




April 14, 2009
College of the Ozarks head basketball coach Steve Shepherd signed Dustin Todd to a letter of intent last week. Todd was a National Junior College Athletic Association first team All American this season and led North Arkansas Community College to 23 wins. The 6’3 post man from Huntsville, Arkansas, averaged 15.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and shot 61% from the field. Pictured are David Burger, Dustin Todd and Steve Shepherd.

College of the Ozarks coach Steve Shepherd announces that 6’5 Webb City guard Trey Laveroni has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at College of the Ozarks. Laveroni, a Missouri Basketball Coaches Association all-stater and unanimous all-Central Ozark Conference Large Division selection averaged 15.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists in helping Webb City finish 16-12 overall and reached the sectional round of the state play-offs.

Davidson signs with Bobcat Basketball
