SUBJECT:  ARMY ROTC NURSE CADET PROGRAM NOW OFFERED AT C OF O

By: Stephanie Bell

At College of the Ozarks, students considering an undergraduate nursing degree now have the opportunity to concurrently enroll in the Army ROTC “Nurse Cadet” program. This newly added program helps students enhance their leadership skills and critical-thinking abilities and offers financial support to help make professional goals a reality. The leadership and management training will benefit either a military or private-sector nursing career.

Nursing students who are Army ROTC cadets have an opportunity for a unique summer nursing experience through the Army ROTC's Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP). The paid, three-week NSTP assigns cadets to Army hospitals throughout the US and Germany and introduces them to the Army Medical Department, as well as the roles and responsibilities of an Army Nurse Corps Officer. One-on-one clinical experience will allow cadets to hone patient skills, develop problem-solving techniques and become comfortable with developing professional skills as a member of the US Army Healthcare Team.

Prospective nursing cadets must be admitted into the C of O Nursing Program and also qualify for enrollment in the ROTC Advanced Program. Depending on level of immersion, the entire program can be completed in four or five years. The first student is currently taking classes for the dual major and is on track to graduate May 2011. Other interested students accepted at C of O may join the program at any time.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Amy Danford completed a similar program at Georgetown University, began her active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant and, five years later, became a Captain. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Army Nursing and certainly felt blessed to serve.  I had many early-career leadership experiences, as well as unique training and travel opportunities,” says Danford.

For more information, please contact Assistant Professor of Nursing Amy Danford at (417) 690-2418 or abenham-danford@cofo.edu , or contact Colonel Gary Herchenroeder, assistant professor of Military Science, at (417) 690-2477 or herchenroeder@cofo.edu.
