the program  The Theatre Department produces four productions per year, including at least one major musical, usually presented in the spring. All students are welcome to participate in these productions. There are many opportunities for students to become actively involved in all aspects of the art of theatre, including acting, singing, dancing, directing, choreography, sound and light design, stage management, costuming and makeup. In addition to the main stage productions presented in the Jones Auditorium, student directors present a number of showcase productions in the intimate James L. Meikle Crossover Theatre. Participation in the Theatre Program is open to all students on either a voluntary or credit-hour basis.

the emphases  The Theatre major offers four emphases, General Theatre, Musical Theatre, Speech and Theatre Education, and Drama Ministry, as well as a General Theatre minor. Students who complete the degree requirements can expect to achieve the objectives of the program which are: 1) to acquire a foundation of knowledge in performance and technical theatre which will enable graduates to pursue a post-graduate education or seek professional employment in the entertainment industry; 2) to develop their creative performance and technical skills through coursework and departmental productions; 3) to illustrate proficiency in several training areas of the theatre which are: stage movement, vocal training, acting, singing, dancing, stagecraft, set design, lighting design, costume design, stage makeup, directing, playwriting, theatre history, music theatre history and script analysis; 4) to experience a variety of creative processes ; 5) to employ critical-thinking skills in assessing artistic achievement.

the facilities  The Theatre Department utilizes two performing spaces; the Jones Auditorium and the James L. Meikle Crossover Theatre. The Jones Auditorium is a fully equipped facility for dramatic and musical productions. The 1000 seat auditorium includes balcony and orchestra seating and has a full-fly loft, large wing space, cyclorama, large dressing rooms and costume shop. The James L. Meikle Crossover Theatre is located under the main stage and seats 65. Operating on an independent lighting system, the Crossover Theatre provides student directors and actors a place to learn and perform their craft.

the work program  The college's work-study program assigns approximately 16 students to the Jones Theatre company. The student workers participate in all aspects of theatre production, including lighting, costume alterations and constructing scenery. Company members also work within the department in such areas as artistic administration.

career opportunities  The College of the Ozarks Theatre Program emphasizes preparation for graduate school and professional experiences. Career choices open to a theatre graduate include: professional stage work, backstage production work, theatre management, radio, television and film. Located just a few miles south of Branson, Missouri, the department is easily accessible to over 40 professional theatres, providing many internships and related work opportunities.
